The first day in Rio was quite a shock for all of us. The contrast to Peru and Bolivia was just vast. Here it was a lot of fat middelaged Europeans and Americans excersising along the beach, sunbathing, walking with their walkmans. It's a big contrast to the thousands of people here sleeping on the street during night.
The climate is also very different. We're back at sealevel again, and we all feel very good about it. No one of us needs this extra breath from time to time, and the temperature is about 25 degrees and the air is very humid.
The first two days we had very nice weather, and where able to really relax on the beach. The sun is very strong down here, so Lars and Odd where a little bit sunburned. It was also very nice waves, and Lars and Odd took a bath, but where stopped after a while by the local baywatch guy telling us that we would be killed if we didn't move to a place with smaller waves.
After these two days we have in fact had bad weather, rain and cloudy. So, we're a little bit dissapointed about that. Due to the weather, we explored the old part of Rio. Quite interesting, and nice weather in the town of course.
Copacabana, where we stayed, is much more lively in the evening. It gets dark here about six o'clock. Something to really be recommended is the national drink Caiprinnhja. It consists of rom, lime and sugar, and is very tasteful and functionell. Havana restaurant has the very best one by the way.
Another thing we would like to recommend is the restaurant Porcao, which again was recommended to us by Tom, a well expirienced Rio traveller. This restaurant has a fixed fee of 20Reals, which is about US10$. Then you can eat as much as you want from a vast and delicate buffet consisiting of both seafood and meat. Desert and drinks are not included.
Prositution is a very common profession down here, and if that's not enough, some of the restaurants are even cooperating with prostitutes. At one particular restaurant, Terrzzaio Atlantico, we had to ask the chef wether this was a restaurant or a brothel. All in all a pretty bad expirience when you are out to dine.
Rio was not the expirience we had hoped for, and we feel that this city is a hype. It should be mentioned though that we are here in the slow season, but anyway it's qool to have been here. A special greeting to our man at the Copacabana beach, Mr. Beach himself, Severo. He can be recommended to fellow travellers.
This is our last letter for this time, and we have had just a magnificient vacation. We had our last dinner together at Havana Cafe, and celebrated the end of this beautiful trip. It has just been enough, and we all look forward to our home country Norway now.
We do hope that all you which have been regular readers, and it's quite some, have enjoyed reading our letters as much as we have enjoyed writing them. So, until next time Ciao....... |
