Bratislava - a beautiful city |

After Krakow, we left for Bratislava in Slovakia. When we at last arrived it turned out to be a beautiful city.
|
We took the train from Krakow to Bratislava, and little did we know that we should have changed train at a station called Breclav. When the ticket conducter came to check our tickets after Breclav, he could inform us that we where on our way to Vienna and that we did not have tickets for that. So we had to buy extra tickets for Vienna, and then from Vienna to Bratislava.
When we finally arrived in Bratislava we found a block complex called Hotel Nivy, and checked in. The rooms where ok, and the price where ok. It's situated outside the centrum of the old city, but taxi is very cheap if you get the right one. Usually the trick is to ask someone to call a taxi for you, especially from airport and railwaystations. If not, the taxies outside of these places charge three times as much as the other ones.
The old town of Bratislava is just beautiful. Nice houses, friendly people and a lot of restaurants, shops, bars and atm machines. One day we had lunch at an Irish pub, and both food and beer was very good. Well the food tasted very good every day, and the best local beer was the Zlaty Basantes.
On the highest point of the city is a castle which really look impressing on distance. We walked the stairs up, and it provided us a magnificient view over the city, which except of the old town contains a lot of house blocks which you can see on the other side of the river. The castle was by all means best on distance if you like castles, but for the view it was worth the walk.
We of course managed to get a picture of the White House of Slovakia, where the president resides. Very nice building indeed.
The last night we enjoyed a bottle of local redwine at the balcony, talking about the next target on the journey. I went down to the reception to ask them for help with departure times to Budapest by train. While I was down in the reception, Lars was at the toilet and the girls where at the balcony, someone had the nerve to actually enter the room and steal the mobile and brand new digital camera of Lars. Just unbelieveable.
The following day we reported the theft at the local policestation, to get the paper Lars needed for the insurance company. It took the whole day to get the report, but we expirienced to drive trough Bratislava in a police car with windows down and Never Ending Story with Limahl on high volume. Hehe. |
